How SUS scoring works

The System Usability Scale (SUS) was created by John Brooke in 1986. It provides a single number representing a composite measure of usability.

Scoring method:

  • Positive questions (odd: 1, 3, 5, 7, 9): subtract 1 from the score
  • Negative questions (even: 2, 4, 6, 8, 10): subtract the score from 5
  • Sum all 10 normalized scores (each 0-4), then multiply by 2.5
  • Final score ranges from 0 to 100

Interpreting scores:

  • Above 80.3: Excellent (A grade)
  • 74-80.3: Good (B grade)
  • 68-74: OK (C grade)
  • 51-68: Poor (D grade)
  • Below 51: Awful (F grade)
